Asphalt Milling

Asphalt Milling in Joliet, IL

asphalt repair, asphalt milling, Joliet IL
There are times when a stretch of road may become exceedingly deteriorated. But rather than tearing up the entire surface, an overlay can be applied over the existing base layers.  Areas of extreme damage, such as potholes or large cracks, will need to be milled prior to layering new aggregate.

Milling is a common form of larger-scale asphalt repair in Joliet that removes the top few inches or so of pavement to prepare the area to receive a new layer.  Milling and overlay is a common part of bitumen upkeep, and there are a few key indicators that your surface may need to go through this process:

  • Widespread cracking, namely block and fatigue cracking.  Fatigue cracks in particular need to be filled before any further work is done to assist in fixing the structural issues that have developed.

  • Deterioration of a surface, causing a coarse look and exposed rock.  Unless repaired, this loss of surface will quickly worsen with time. This type of loss, called raveling, is often indicative of older bitumen.

  • Drainage problems causing pools of water to form on the surface.  In this case, the surface will need to be milled at an angle to assist with drainage.

Before beginning a new layer is applied, it’s critical that a thorough assessment be done of the existing surface to determine if its even a viable candidate for such work.  Severe structural damage is often an indication that the surface may need to be completely ripped up and replaced rather than having a new aggregate layered applied.  Additionally, moderate to severe water draining issues are usually a sign that regrading work will need to be completed, as overlay alone won’t get the job done.

Once the need for a new layer has been established, there are three major steps required to completing the project:
  • Milling: Asphalt milling involves removing the top deteriorated layer of pavement to make room for a new layer that can bond to the layer below it and create a level surface. Depending on the severity and depth of the top layer’s damage, the contractor will remove 1-3” of a surface.
  • Base Repair: In cases where an asphalt base has become damaged from sunken areas or holes, base repair may be necessary to avoid problems later.  Damaged areas should be replaced with new bitumen.
  • Paving: After partial surface removal and base repair are complete, the new bitumen layer can be applied.  A layer roughly 1.5”-2” thick will be paved over the prepared surface.

In certain situations, overlays can also be applied to damaged concrete.  Unlike with bitumen, there isn’t an easy way to pave deteriorated areas with new concrete without ripping the entire surface up, so a pavement overlay could be an option.  Because concrete is a harder surface than asphalt Joliet, expansion joints are needed when applying a layer of aggregate to allow for expansion and contraction throughout the changing seasons.  Cracks often form in the bitumen along these joints, which must be filled to avoid deterioration.
